  3.     Since critical eyebrows were raised at my opposition to the
  4. construction of the Third Temple in Jerusalem (RELIGION, Oct.
  5. 16), may I bring to your attention none other than our
  6. prophets' and sages' protesting building temples and sanctuaries
  7. when the miniature temples of society -- our families, streets,
  8. schools, political and social institutions -- do not conduct
  9. their day-to-day affairs with the sanctity reflecting humanity,
  10. which was created in the image of God. Were Isaiah to scan
  11. TIME's weekly reportage of the enormous ailments of society,
  12. would he not exclaim once again, "What need I of all your
  13. sacrifices?"

  18.     One need not be a fanatic to appreciate that the security
  19. of the Al Aqsa Mosque, which occupies a site near that proposed
  20. for the Third Temple, is as sacred to Muslims as the security
  21. of Israel is to Jews. Failure to understand is to deny the
  22. reality of a situation that is already dangerously volatile.
